Ellis Park Stadium, recently renamed Coca Cola Park, is situated in the heart of Johannesburg. It is well-known for hosting the 1995 Rugby World Cup final between New Zealand and South Africa. This first rate stadium is now set to host five first-round matches, one second-round match and a quarter-final match in the 2010 Football World Cup.
Ahead of the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 and the 2010 World Cup, the stadium is undergoing a facelift to the value of approximately R240 million. The new additions will see the already first rate stadium fitted with improved changing rooms, superior restroom facilities, new lighting and fresh aesthetics in the foyer.
Major changes will see the capacity of the stadium increase from 57 000 to 62 000, a new car park with 1 200 parking bays, and upgrades to the VIP, media and medical facilities. The emergency tunnel is also being widened significantly to increase safety measures.
In addition to the revamping of Ellis Park stadium, the wider Ellis Park sporting precinct will also be refurbished. The makeover will see increased convenience in pedestrian passage, feature lights, increased safety and security, and commissioned mosaic work on the pillars of the bridge leading to Ellis Park.
Ellis Park stadium was a world class stadium before the revamp. All the changes made now are added features that will assure football fans have a distinctly pleasurable World Cup experience.
